PERSONAL PROFILE:
Dr. Chinwe Chukwudi is an experienced veterinarian, molecular biologist, and clinical pathologist with a DVM (10 distinctions) from the University of Nigeria and a PhD in molecular biology and microbial genetics from the Royal Veterinary College, University of London. A former Commonwealth Scholar (PhD studies), Erasmus Mundus Scholar, Commonwealth Fellow (Postdoc), and a fellow of the African Postdoctoral Training Initiative (APTI Cohort 2, which is a partnership of the African Academy of Sciences, NIH, and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Health, USA), Dr. Chukwudi has received several honors and awards in recognition of her excellence in research. She won the Nigerian Young Academy’s National Young Scientist Prize in Microbiology for the year 2017. Her research interests and skills are in the area of combating infectious diseases, especially via studies in microbial pathogenesis and genetics, molecular pathology and diagnostics, antimicrobial mechanisms of action and resistance, virulence factors, toxin/antitoxin systems, drug interactions, enhanced therapeutics, and drug delivery. Her current research work focuses on the use of molecular tools and biotechnology to enhance diagnostics and therapeutics for Neglected Tropical Diseases, especially zoonotic protozoan diseases (trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis). She is passionate about uplifting the research profile of diseases peculiar to Africa, many of which have huge prospects for the development of novel intervention strategies. Her outstanding research skills are complemented by an equally outstanding grantsmanship and research management skill. Her career goal is to build a strong and effective team of researchers that would spearhead molecular research in tropical diseases using modern biotechnology, with a strong passion for teaching and mentoring the upcoming generation of scientists and researchers in Africa. She is a member of several national and international professional bodies, including the Nigerian Young Academy, the American Society of Microbiology, and the African Research Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases (ARNTD), and a member of WHO Skin NTD working group (Drug development and access), and a member of WHO Skin NTD working group (Drug development and access).
